very thin paper with an uneven surface with a soft white color that can absorb large amounts of water, suitable for ink and watercolor painting with blurring and pouring techniques. Xuan paper is traditionally used in Chinese painting (Gunbi and Sei style). This paper made from wood pulp is also suitable for suibokug (sumi-e): a Japanese technique of painting with fuzzy ink on thin rice paper or silk. Also popular for making Chinese lanterns, lampshades, collages and decoupage.
